The use of bicycles and PMDs (Personal Mobility Devices) has increased significantly. However, due to the violations of some errant riders, it poses a threat to pedestrian traffic safety. In response, the authorities ordered that the use of electric scooters on all sidewalks be banned from November 5.

With the implementation of the electric scooter partial ban, some analysts believe that this may prompt riders to switch to cycling.

According to the overall blueprint for land transportation development 2040, Singapore will realize its vision of building a “20-minute town and 45-minute city” so that people can enjoy a faster and more convenient travel experience. As electric scooters are banned from being used on sidewalks, experts believe that authorities must make targeted adjustments to help implement the plan.

In addition, the authorities should also consider issues such as how pedestrians and users of personal mobility tools need to coexist. Some of the feedback received have pointed out that when planning, the authorities should ensure comprehensive infrastructure construction and provide more comprehensive transportation facilities.
