This video explores how Singapore is not just redesigning a button, but entire parts of the city – Silver Zones – for an important part of the community.
Singapore is a city state where everyone lives in an urban area.
The key feature of Singapore’s population is that it is getting older.
Consequently, Silver Zones are implemented in Singapore, with Silver Zone Road Safety Initiatives (SZRSIs) to improve senior pedestrians safety.
Green Man +
Green Man + is a Land Transport Authority (LTA) initiative designed to meet the needs of elderly pedestrians and pedestrians with disabilities (PWD) who may need more time to cross the road. When using signalised pedestrian crossings equipped with the Green Man +, elderly pedestrians and people with disabilities can expect up to 12 seconds more green man time.
How it Works?
When the Green Man + function is activated, it gives elderly pedestrians and people with disabilities more time to cross the street. This is accomplished by tapping the CEPAS-compliant senior citizen concession card or Green Man + card on the reader mounted above the standard traffic light pole push button. The system will extend green man time, which ranges from 3 to 12 seconds depending on the size of the crossing, once the card reader confirms that it is a valid card. Most of the selected pedestrian crossings will have 5 seconds more green man time on average. The increased crossing time will allow elderly pedestrians and people with disabilities to cross at a more comfortable pace.
