Tragic Hit-and-Run on BKE Claims Motorcyclist’s Life
A tragic hit-and-run incident along the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) on February 6th has left a 22-year-old motorcyclist dead and his 23-year-old pillion rider seriously injured.
The alleged culprit, a 27-year-old driver, fled to Malaysia immediately after the accident, failing to render aid or report the incident to authorities within the required timeframe.
Culprit Apprehended After Fleeing to Malaysia
However, thanks to diligent efforts by the Traffic Police and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), the driver’s identity and vehicle registration number were determined through ground inquiries and surveillance footage from various sources.
The suspect was apprehended while attempting to re-enter Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint on February 7th.
Driver Faces Accountability in Court
Facing charges in court on February 9th, the driver could be held accountable for a range of offences including dangerous driving causing death and grievous hurt, along with failing to stop after an accident and neglecting to assist the injured.
If convicted, he could face significant penalties, including imprisonment and driving disqualification.
Authorities’ Pledge to Enforce Traffic Laws
The authorities stress their commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring the safety of all road users.
Meanwhile, a friend of the victims, identified as Emilia, has appealed for witnesses to come forward, shedding light on the couple’s tragic journey towards Johor Bahru for an impromptu trip that ended in devastation.
