Inclusive Roads for All: Deliveroo’s Push for Road Safety Awareness Among Riders and Persons with Disabilities

In a meaningful effort to enhance road safety for all, Deliveroo Singapore has taken a significant step forward with its latest initiative, “Inclusive Roads for All.”

The program, organized in conjunction with Deliveroo’s annual Rider Safety Month, is the first of its kind to focus on improving safety practices for both delivery riders and users of Personal Mobility Aids (PMAs), particularly those with disabilities (PwDs). This initiative aligns with Singapore’s broader Enabling Masterplan 2030, which strives for a more inclusive society where individuals with disabilities can navigate public spaces safely.

Empowering Riders to Create Safer Roads for PwDs

On October 9, 2024, Deliveroo collaborated with SPD, a charity that supports persons with disabilities, to conduct a hands-on workshop designed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by PMA users on Singapore’s roads.

The workshop aimed to empower Deliveroo riders by equipping them with the skills needed to interact with PMA users safely and considerately, highlighting the importance of fostering a more inclusive road environment.

With Singapore set to introduce new regulations next year concerning PMA use on public roads, this initiative marks a proactive step by Deliveroo.

Jason Parke, General Manager of Deliveroo Singapore, expressed the company’s commitment to creating safer streets, stating, “Safety is at the heart of everything we do at Deliveroo. Through initiatives like these, we’re not only enhancing the safety of our riders but also raising awareness about the unique challenges faced by PMA users.”

The workshop, which took place at AIBI Maxwell, brought together over 50 participants, including Deliveroo riders and individuals with disabilities.

It featured a series of simulation activities that offered riders without disabilities the opportunity to experience the challenges PMA users face daily, such as navigating kerbs, tight spaces, and road crossings.

These exercises were critical in helping riders gain a deeper understanding of how to support PwDs safely while navigating Singapore’s busy streets.

A Step Towards Inclusive Roads and Safety Awareness

As part of the workshop, representatives from SPD delivered presentations on disability awareness and the safe use of PMAs, followed by discussions on how to create a more considerate road environment for all users.

Riders were taught to assist their counterparts using PMAs in various road situations, focusing on ensuring both their safety and that of other road users.

These collaborative efforts between Deliveroo and SPD exemplify how education can play a key role in creating safer streets for everyone.

Noel Ong Lee, a 46-year-old Deliveroo rider who participated in the workshop, shared his reflections: “This workshop made me realize the specific challenges faced by people with disabilities on the roads. It’s a good reminder that we are all responsible for keeping the streets safe for everyone.”

Supporting National Efforts for a More Inclusive Singapore

This year’s Rider Safety Month is closely aligned with Singapore’s Enabling Masterplan 2030, which seeks to improve infrastructure, policies, and job opportunities for PwDs.

The initiative is part of a broader national effort to make Singapore a more inclusive society. As Mr. Abhimanyau Pal, CEO of SPD, noted, “By sharing the safe use of PMAs in providing delivery services and equipping riders with the knowledge to navigate challenges faced by persons with disabilities, we are fostering a community where every individual feels supported and safe.”

In addition to the workshop, Deliveroo has partnered with various organizations such as the Singapore Cycling Federation, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), and Singapore Traffic Police to further promote road safety.

These collaborations include emergency preparedness courses and riding lessons that emphasize defensive techniques, ensuring that Deliveroo riders are well-prepared to handle any road situation.

A Collective Effort Towards Safer Roads

Deliveroo’s “Inclusive Roads for All” initiative represents a significant move towards creating a safer and more inclusive road environment in Singapore. As new regulations come into place next year, it is crucial for all road users to be aware of the unique challenges faced by those with disabilities. By equipping its riders with the necessary skills and awareness, Deliveroo is not only prioritizing the safety of its team but also contributing to a safer road culture for everyone.

As motorcyclists, cyclists, and PMA users share the same roads, initiatives like this are essential to fostering a more understanding and considerate driving environment.

With continued collaboration between organizations like Deliveroo and SPD, Singapore can move closer to a future where all road users feel supported, respected, and safe.
