Worker Knocked Over by Oncoming Lorry at PIE

A recent accident occurred along PIE, involving a construction worker and a lorry which was captured on CCTV provided by a construction company.

In the short 16-seconds clip, believed to have been recorded on July 2nd at approximately 11:30 pm, construction activities can be observed in the 4th lane of the expressway.

However, upon a closer look, it becomes apparent that one of the workers was standing on the right shoulder of the expressway.

Dashing through the lanes

In the latter part of the video, the worker can be seen attempting to cross two lanes before being struck by an oncoming lorry.

Worker knocked hard by oncoming lorry

Despite the absence of audio in the recording, the remaining construction workers can be seen reacting in immediate shock, ceasing their work as soon as the accident occurred.

The impact was so hard that it threw the construction worker several metres forward before the remaining workers came rushing to check on him.

Likely to have misjudged the speed of lorry

Based solely on the video footage, it is impossible to ascertain the worker’s intentions.

However, certain netizens have speculated that it could have been a deliberate act of self-harm or a planned accident aimed at obtaining insurance payouts.

“Looks like worker attempted suicide”

While another netizen commented  “These foreign workers have nothing to lose … Just their life.”

While it is difficult to determine the worker’s state of mind during the accident, it appears probable that the worker misjudged the speed of the oncoming lorry before making the attempt to dash across the lanes.

Drivers should practise safe driving habits by slowing down near construction sites

Although we cannot tell from the video whether the “Slow Down” sign has been put up in this particular construction site, it is always a good practice for drivers to slow down when approaching sites like this.

One motorist also added:

“This is the reason I slow down all the way when I’m about to pass by a construction site like this. But this has to be done gradually and not 90 km/hr to 40 km/hr in 2 seconds”

It may be due to movement of people working on site or slow moving vehicles moving in and out of the lanes. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

With this, we extend our well wishes for a swift and complete recovery to the construction worker.
