SBS Transit has earned a nomination in the Trendy Safety Gadget category at the ROADS Awards 2025 for its Handbrake Audio Alert System, a simple yet highly effective solution that is preventing potentially catastrophic runaway bus incidents.
Handbrake Audio Alert System implemented across SBS Transit buses
Launched across the entire fleet in November 2023, the system emits a loud audio cue if the handbrake is not engaged when the driver leaves the seat. This clear and immediate alert has significantly reduced incidents caused by oversight, with runaway bus cases dropping sharply since implementation.
System alert mechanism in action
The innovation came in response to 22 such incidents in 2022. SBS Transit formed a cross-departmental team to develop and deploy the system, overcoming technical hurdles and ensuring staff were properly trained to use it.
